Spotlight on: Scorch Makeup

I set out several months ago to talk about a beautiful line focusing only on lip products. After many delays and life happenings, my review has finally come to fruition (sorry Christine!).

I met Christine Kennedy last year at a networking event in Del Mar, CA. She was there promoting her brand Scorch Makeup which is a line of Leaping Bunny Certified Cruelty-Free lip color that is wholly made in California. This ex-Pharmacist turned beauty entrepreneur (and super sweet person!) decided that she wanted to create a lifestyle beauty brand that was toxin free and healthy, but also packed a punch of color. The line consists of 5 different formulations -

  • Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick
  • Smudge Proof Matte Liquid Lipstick
  • High Shine Lip Gloss
  • Color Rich Lip Gloss
  • Lip Creme

Each formula comes in a variety of colors that can vary seasonally. (Colors shown were sampled)

The Liquid Lipsticks are a long-wearing formula that are lightweight and buildable enough pigment to wear all day. The are applied easily with the included wand and never feel heavy or dry.

The Lip Glosses each have their own benefits. High Shine has sparkle and is a great add on layer on top of any color. Both are infused with Vitamin E for long lasting, hydrating color.

And my favorite, the Lip Creme deliver great pigmented color and are a luxurious creme finish. Not as long wearing as the liquid lipsticks, but they are a great option when you want a more moisturizing lip color.

I sat down with Christine to ask her a few questions about the decision to become a beauty boss and what motivations and struggles she encountered along the way.

What was the motivation behind starting your business?

I realized how important it was for me to follow my dreams and do something I love for my career. I was a pharmacist but knew I would not be happy in that role long term. Growing up, fashion & beauty always excited me, but societal pressures pushed me to go the “safe route” and get my graduate degree in pharmacy instead. After working in the field for a few years, I knew I had to make a change, and that’s when I started to come up with ideas J

Did you encounter any obstacles or struggles along the way?

Yes, and I still do to this day! I look at them as learning experiences and am actually grateful for the decisions I’ve made even if they weren’t necessarily the right ones. It’s helpful to know what not to do in order to start moving in the right direction!

What sets your brand apart from the rest?

We are a cruelty free brand and all of our products are made in America J Scorch is also very much a lifestyle brand – and I haven’t seen that done with other beauty companies!

What are you most proud of as a brand?

Our fun branding and imagery J I love putting together the plan for our colorful and bright Instagram page. It makes me happy to look at!

Do you have a favorite product in your lineup?

Hmm tough question! The ones I wear most are: Ember lip crème, Flame liquid lipstick, & our new Tropic Crush high shine gloss – but I love them all!

Any great new things on the horizon that you can share?

We just launched our 2 new spring collections which I’m so excited about! They are our high shine glosses & velvet matte liquid lipsticks. There will some new additions for summer including a few really fun limited edition products.
